Instructional League Week 5
Here we go again, week 5 and things are once again going strong! Even if we did lose, it was only by 3 this time. 8 – 5 Sweeps, good curling guys.
The good news at the bar is that we did make it into the bonspiel up in park city, so that will be a good time for sure. Next weekend is the Texas Open Bonspiel and I think me Krystal and Steve are going to go and spectate and socialize since we didn’t get in. Should be a fun time at the very least.
Instructional League Week 4
Week 4, and this week we played the Curley Temples and we had a very close game! The final score was 6-5 Twinkle Faeries. Putting us at 3-1 for the season so far, putting us at the top of the league. This is my second game skipping, and I have to say I much prefer to play third to skipping. I like to sweep, and when it comes down to it, my strategy just isn’t what it needs to be for this league.
Up in the bar tonight we found out that we didn’t make it into the Texas Open Bonspiel, it turns out that we got wait listed. Oh well looks like they didn’t save the club spots like we thought they did. But of course Krystal in her infinite wisdom decided that we should check out Dan’s Curling Bonspiel Blog, and find us a bonspiel to go compete in. And we found the Park City Curling Club who was hosting the Utah Rocky Mountain Bonspiel April 30th – May 2nd, and Krystal grabbed my phone, and called up the club right then and there to find out if they still had any slots open. Turns out they did, and she got us a slot saved and said she would send in the money the next morning. Now I can’t wait until the end of the month!
Instructional League Week 3
Holy cow the “Smokin’ Rocks” well… smoked us tonight. 7-2 we won one whole end, the first end. Then all down hill from there. But hey I was skipping tonight, and I think I learned a few things about the game that I didn’t know before. For example a very vague description of how to play “negative ice”.
Somehow when there is a fall on the ice, stone drifts that way even with the opposite turn, if you change the turn of the stone and have it go with the fall, the stone goes straighter. I don’t know exactly how it works, and for sure don’t understand the physics behind it. But I know it works, and I know that you need it on our arena ice.
Tonight at the bar after curling interesting things went down as well. I met a nice Canadian girl who happened to show up to the league that night, Krystal. And of course there was talk of the Texas Open Bonspiel, that is an open curling tournament in Texas for those of you not in the know. During the talk about the TOB, somehow a team was put together that consisted of Krystal, Steve, Chris, and myself. That is right three brand spanking new curlers, and one very seasoned curler going to a bonspiel!
Instructional League Week 2
Here it is the second week of curling. They started us out once again with another half of the time with a semi-lengthy lesson, really leaving us only an hour to play our game against team “Stone Cold”. We did win the game however, the score ended up being 3-2, close game.
Holy cow, that new broom is LIGHT. I will admit I am no seasoned curler, so my opinion here could be slightly off, but when I was sweeping tonight the broom was so light that when I swept it was all over the place. So I fixed the head of the broom so it wouldn’t swivel all over the place, and then started to put an entire body weight on it. That did the trick.
Instructional League Week 1
My curling league started tonight, apparently both the Tuesday and Wednesday leagues filled up double quick, not giving any time for people to dilly dally on sending in their registration. Not only that but I also found out that of the two open houses that the DFW Curling Club hosted, the one I went to was the tame one. 200 people showed up looking to curl the first open house, and holy cow a massive 500 more showed up to the second one, with the club having to turn away 300 people due to time and safety constraints.
But on to tonight. The first half hour of the night was spent teaching us how to slide a little more properly than they were able to at the open houses. And how awesome that I get the same guy once again from the other day teaching my group. Good ol’ Serge Poissaint, a wonderful frenchy from Canada, heck of a teacher, even if his teaching is on a slower pace than everyone else.
During the entire game the president of the club, Judy Friend, was walking around asking for names for everyone’s teams. My team composed of Justin Donaldson, Carolyn Weeks, Dakota Weeks, and myself was eventually named the “Twinkle Faeries”. And yes I am perfectly happy with that name for two reasons:
- When someone beats us is doesn’t sound that bad, or impressive to the person they are talking to.
- When we beat someone, how embarrassing is it to tell someone that you got beat by the “Twinkle Faeries”.
The team we played against was named “Chilled Spam” after the shirt that one of the people on the team was wearing. And yes, we did beat Chilled Spam 4-0 winning 4 straight ends for one point a piece! What a good start to curling.
I ordered a broom earlier this week too! I decided on a carbon fiber Reactor2 made by Olson. Thank you www.hugecurlingsavings.com for having such great deals, and being willing to ship to far-away lands like Texas.
